To begin with, it should be noted that emotional intelligence – is a group of mental abilities, which are involved in recognizing and understanding our own emotions and emotions of others. It is essential to note that people with high emotional intelligence are well aware of their emotions and feelings of others, so they can manage their emotional sphere, and therefore their behavior in society. Also, emotional intelligence leaders are more adaptive in society and for them it is easier to achieve certain goals in collaboration with others.

It should be noted that there are six basic styles of leadership: authority leader, uniting leader, democratic leader, coach-leader, authoritarian leader and leader, who sets the pace. As a rule, the most effective are leaders with a high level of emotional intelligence, which allows them, unite into their management style more than four of these styles, choosing the most appropriate for particular situation. As a fact, with the usage of this combination of styles efficiency of employees is much higher, and they work with great enthusiasm.

Modern experts distinguish four components of emotional intelligence:

  • Tracking and understanding their own feelings and emotions;
  • The ability to use and control their behavior and maintain the level of energy and motivation to the desired level;
  • Understanding the needs of others and the ability to use this knowledge with the aim to make them aware of the areas of personal development, which they need;
  • The ability to effectively interact with others and achieve results through a live communication, discussion and collaboration.

As a matter of fact, most books about emotional intelligence, in one way or another, are related to leadership. The idea is that leaders are people with well-developed emotional intelligence because the development of emotional intelligence allows them to get rid of many fears and doubts and begin to act and interact with people to achieve their goals. Also, emotional intelligence allows people to understand the motives of others and, consequently, “read them like a book”. In other words, emotional intelligence helps leaders to find the right people and effectively communicate with them. However, the skill of emotional intelligence can be used in different ways: either manipulate people, either unite efforts of the team. Consequently, regardless of his intentions, the emotional intelligence leader can achieve results with the efforts of many people, increasing the likelihood of success of the project in comparison with a traditional leader. It is extremely important to note that emotional intelligence leader does not necessarily must have a high IQ, because emotional intelligence allows him to create a team of smart people and use their genius.

I would like to say that the phenomenon of emotional intelligence people discuss from late 1990-s. However, this concept has already been successfully migrated into the institutions, schools, MBA programs, etc. In our schools, there is even special subject – SEL (Social and Emotional Learning), predictor of which is the idea that relationships – is the basis of learning, that emotions are influence how and what we teach, that developed emotional intelligence is essential to maintain health, successful employment and, ultimately, success in life. It should be noted that with the development of emotional intelligence, MBA program have begun to include more courses on the psychology of people, as well as began to make a much greater emphasis on problem solving and stress management and rely on the psychology of management and leadership.
